Stand up comedians are all liars. In a break with comedy tradition, Australian comedian Lou Wall admits it, then proves it.

Lou’s televised appearance at the Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala went globally viral, their set: a story about trying to flog a bed frame on Facebook Marketplace, was, apparently, viewed over 50 million times in 48 hours. But is the story true?

It is verifiably a fact that Lou Wall is a multi-award-winning comedian, composer and writer. They have twice been nominated for Most Outstanding Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and they won Best Show at the Sydney Comedy Festival 2024.

And the comedian is in full flow here. The gag rate is high, very high, and the message is clear. In the age of easily manipulated moving images and alternative facts, can we trust that anything we are told is real? Comedians often say that they stretch the truth for comic effect. It’s more accurate to say that they don’t let reality get in the way of a good joke. Does it matter if we are entertained?
