Olivia Xing is a Chinese comedian, living in Los Angeles. Baby of Colour is a show about contradictions, or perhaps more accurately, thinking two things at once. How does Olivia chose to define herself as a performer? Does she want to be a club comic or an advocate for change?

The show is part playful stand up and part political theatre. For example, we are transported from behind the mic to a gynaecologist’s chair, as the comedian discusses getting a coil inserted. Through the doctor, Olivia’s subconscious feelings are given voice. We learn how contraception can be empowering but can also be used by the powerful to control.

Olivia is so good at creating characters you forget that she is the only one on stage. At one point she falls out with herself, playing herself as the director, and stages a backstage fight.

There’s also a very funny routine with a cat in it.

If you’re a fan of straight stand up, you’ll enjoy this show. If you’re a fan of absurd political theatre, you’ll enjoy this show. If you love cats, you’ll love this show. A very funny and informative hour of proper Fringe comedy.
