Hal Cruttenden: Can Dish It Out But Can’t Take It - On The Mic

Hal Cruttenden: Can Dish It Out But Can’t Take It ★★★★

This Review is from August 2025

Hal Cruttenden reflects on his life, post-divorce. Though single, the middle-aged comedian isn’t lonely. To his and his ex’s surprise, women still find him attractive. Back on the dating scene after 25 years, it turns out that he’s just as neurotic, immature, and naïve as he was in his youth. But what’s next? A new partner? Or a slow drift into sad, single old age?

Hal roasts couples in the audience. Those with a fear off being picked should avoid the first few rows. His interactions can be brutal. But ultimately, the joke is on the comedian, as it should be.

Hal briefly strays away from the subject of relationships to discuss politics and the role of social media in making us just a little bit think, but it’s the tragedy of his personal life where the purest comedy gold is mined.

While his life at home may be chaotic, his stand-up set is assured.

A version of this review appears on Episode 4 of the On the Mic: Five a Day podcast.
