If I can be superficial for a moment, Mark Thomas does not look anywhere close to sixty-three years old. He’s a very handsome man, and as he performs 40 in Stand-Up Years, he’s as relentlessly energetic on stage as ever.

Long time fans will not be disappointed by this set. He skewers all those in public life that need skewering. His sharp political gags on any given subject are enhanced as we learn what we can do to make things better.

There are also some more tender, personal moments. Mark and his sister are currently caring for their elderly mum. Having worked as an unpaid carer for many years I can relate.

According to Carers UK, there are 1.7 million people providing over fifty hours of care a week to a relative, with no pay. And while anybody can enjoy this show, it is to the carers that 40 in Stand-Up Years should be dedicated.
