Miss Brexit is a musical, genderqueer, satirical take on the Brexit referendum and the integration of immigrants into British society.
It features a mock reality show where European contestants compete to stay in the UK. Immigrants from Switzerland (Maxence Marmy), Portugal (Ricardo Ferreira), Catalonia (Alba Villaitodo), and Spain (Shivone Dominguez Blascikova) each present their reasons for wanting to remain.
Satirising European and English stereotypes, the contestants are subjected to various challenges, such as a tea-serving competition. There’s some funny crowd interaction; the host (George Berry) is the star of the show. One second, he’s improvising with the people in character, the next he’s in the middle of a song and dance routine. He asks trivia questions about British culture and history, which, amusingly, many Brits in the audience struggled in answering.
What the audience didn’t struggle with, was when voting for contestants to leave the UK. I think we were supposed to feal sorry for the foreigners, thrown off our island. Many in the audience simply cheered. I don’t know if this is an issue with the script or the presentation, or a quirk of the day I was there.
Or maybe Fringe audiences aren’t as woke as people think.
